Normally I would not recommend entering an art contest. They tend to just be used by companies to get free work out of people. Some of them even charge you an entry fee to give them free work! One thing they can be good for though is giving yourself a hard deadline to make a portfolio piece that you would like to make anyway. That was the case for me with this Battle Chasers creature contest.
Being a fan of the comic book, I wanted to bring in some elements that tied directly into the existing lore of the book. In this case I went with the idea of discarded Wargolem parts being used to re-animate the dead.
As I started drawing the creature I found myself becoming interested in the person who might have built this abomination. So I set about adding a Frankenstein like doctor to the piece.
Part of the contest was writing a short backstory for the creature and listing what sort of attacks it would have in the game. This turned out to be a great exercise. It really caused me to think about the story behind everything I was painting, because I knew at some point I was going to have to write something down. Normally I'm not a big fan of writing, but I may need to change my attitude and do this more often.
Overall I'm glad that I was able to create a fun piece of art in a short amount of time, and I think it's simply because I had a deadline.
